How does the Starlink Performance Kit compare with the Starlink Standard Kit (Gen 3)?

Compared to the Standard Kit, the Performance Kit delivers higher download and upload speeds, wider field of view for better connectivity, and much stronger resistance to harsh weather, and better performance in extreme heat.

The Performance Kit uses a flat, electronic phased array antenna, while the Standard relies on a motorized dish. That advanced design comes at a higher price point, making it better suited for enterprise users, vessels, and challenging environments. The Standard Kit, by contrast, is aimed more at residential and casual use.

Is the Starlink Performance Kit worth paying more for?

It depends on how you plan to use it. For those who need reliable high-speed internet for activities like 4K streaming, heavy data transfers, or staying connected in extreme environments, the Performance Kit’s capabilities may justify the investment.

If your needs are lighter — such as standard web browsing, video calls, or casual streaming — the Standard Kit usually provides more than enough at a lower cost.

What should I know about installing and setting up the Performance Kit?

Setup is similar to the Standard Kit, but with some added flexibility. You’ll want to:

  • Use the Starlink app’s “Check for Obstructions” tool to find a clear view of the sky.
  • Mount the dish with the included wedge mount for a secure installation.
  • Note that the included performance cable is 25m (82ft), though longer cables are available if needed.
  • Choose whether to run the system with a Starlink router or a third-party router, depending on your network setup

What can negatively affect the Performance of a Starlink antenna?

  • Heavy rain and heavy snow can reduce Starlink signal to zero.
  • Obstructions, like masts, radar antennas, or close buildings, will cause Starlink signal loss
  • More than 50ft between the Starlink router and your wireless device will cause significantly slower Starlink internet speeds on the user device.

Do I need to use the Starlink Router with Starlink Performance kit?

  • While you are able to use several other routers, like the MDS Blender or Peplink, we find that the Starlink Performance system has more functionality when used with the Starlink Router Gen 3.

What additional network performance features do I get with the Starlink Router?

  • Starlink router allows for easy wireless mesh network to expand your onboard wireless coverage, without running additional network cables
